A lifetime on display
Exhibit showcases decades of work by Orono costume designer Jack Edwards

Jack Edwards' love of clothing design led to a career that stretched over decades. It took him from the high fashion streets of New York City to Hollywood to the Guthrie Theater and the annual Christmas shows at the downtown Minneapolis Dayton's.

The 77-year-old designer, who has made his home on Lake Minnetonka in Orono for nearly 40 years, is the subject of a major retrospective at the University of Minnesota's Goldstein Museum of Design.

"Character in Costume" includes costumes and couture, along with hundreds of illustrations from throughout the years, articles about Edwards' long career and videos showcasing how his work came across on the stage.

Council works to improve lakefront
The Wayzata City Council agreed to spend up to $100,000 to work toward improving the city's lakefront area along Lake Street.

For some time the council has been concerned that its greatest asset was underutilized, causing the city to lose visitors and businesses to neighboring cities.

As result, it formed a task force about a year ago to study how to revitalize the area.

The Lakefront Improvement Taskforce includes two council members, Andrew Mullin and Tom Tanner, and eight other community and business members.

Parents work to make teen travel safer
More American students are traveling abroad than ever before.

According to the Institute of International Education, the nonprofit organization that oversees the Fulbright Program and works to promote foreign exchange opportunities, the number of American students participating in study abroad programs has more than tripled in the past two decades.

And while most of those students return home with tales of grand adventure, some come back with tales of woe.

Even worse, some might not return at all. Unfortunately, that's what happened to one Mound family.

Skippers score big win on Hockey Day Minnesota
According to Minnetonka boys' hockey coach Brian Urick, the Skippers did a little soul searching after suffering a 3-2 loss to conference rival Edina on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Whatever they did, it must have worked because less than 48 hours after getting tripped up by the Hornets, the Skippers were celebrating a 9-3 victory over No. 1-ranked and previously unbeaten Duluth East.

"I think we had a good meeting after the Edina game on where we're heading as a team. I thought against Edina we played really selfish, one-on-one hockey. Getting frustrated, teammates yelling at one another - we had some dissension," Urick said.

Trojans top South in final non-conference tune up
After 15 wins in 16 games during the non-conference season, the Wayzata girls' basketball team is ready to get serious. The reason for that is because the Lake Conference is seriously stronger than it's ever been with the five teams owning a combined record of 70-7.

The Trojans, who are ranked No. 3 in Class 4A behind conference foes Hopkins and Edina, routed Minneapolis South 76-34 on Friday, Jan. 21 in the team's final tune-up before the conference schedule begins this week.

Two exhibits open in Hopkins
Artists John Wells and Pratibha Gupta have different backgrounds and approaches to art, but both have seen a transformation in their work in the last decade and a half.

For Wells, it was brought on by a condition that forced a change in the way he approached painting.

For Gupta, it was a matter of exploring a new medium - pottery - that had always fascinated her.

Their recreation will be on display over the next month at the Hopkins Center for the Arts in simultaneous exhibits, Wells' "Between Drawing and Painting" and Gupta's "Artful Vessels."

Wells will bring several dozen recent paintings.

Ali Holman: Workout smarter, not longer
So you wake up, get the kids off to school, go to work, run errands, make dinner, do homework, go to hockey and then get ready for bed. How in the world can you fit working out in this crazy schedule?

That is the question many people ask every day, and one of the main reasons why fitness is one of the first things to go by the wayside for busy people. Going to the gym for two hours round-trip just is not doable.
