Vicksburg Lane to remain four lanes
Plymouth staff say the timing isn't right
Vicksburg Lane will remain four lanes after the Plymouth City Council opted against restriping the road to three lanes.
While the Aug. 24 vote was unanimous, not everyone on the council liked the decision.
"I wish we could do more to provide safety for the road," said Council Member Tim Bildsoe (At-Large).
The council had discussed restriping the already busy roadway from four lanes to three lanes because of the number of accidents on the road.
The crash rate and severity of accidents on the road are twice as high as the Hennepin County average. Monday, August 30, 2010

Cities look to fill empty seats
Council races lack candidates in some cities
Every ballot on Election Day gives voters a chance to write in a candidate as their vote. Rarely do write-in candidates get elected on write-in votes alone, but for Minnetonka Beach and Tonka Bay, it will be the best option for filling their empty seats. Monday, August 30, 2010

Arboretum welcomes new executive director
Edward Schneider is fourth director
In July, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum welcomed Edward Schneider as its new executive director. He is the fourth director in the Arboretum's 52 year history.
His first month on the job, Schneider said, has been both busy and exciting.
"Everyone I've talked to in relation to the Arboretum has been so enthusiastic. That enthusiasm is infectious," he said. "I've been overwhelmed by the support and love people have for this Arboretum."
To acclimate to his new position, Schneider has been speaking with members, donors and other stakeholders and asking them where they would like to see the Arboretum in 20 years. Monday, August 23, 2010

Hopkins teen wins hefty scholarship
Gavin Ovsak creates device to make computers easier to use
Until February of this year, Gavin Ovsak hadn't entered a science fair competition before. Knowing that, it's tempting to say that the $10,000 scholarship he just won for his science fair project is an extreme case of beginner's luck.
Ovsak isn't denying that a little bit of luck fell into his lap, but he's also quick to point out that he worked hard to achieve his success.
"Because I'd never been to a science fair before, I didn't know anything about the caliber of the other projects, but I knew the point was to push yourself," said the 16-year-old Hopkins teen.
Ovsak's project was inspired by his volunteer work at the Courage Center, a nonprofit organization that aims to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
While working with individuals at the Courage Center, Ovsak said, "I found there was a need for technology that was more in tune with their needs." Monday, August 16, 2010
