Upcoming key contests

Boys' hockey

Blake vs. Minnetonka, Tuesday, Jan. 19, 7 p.m., Pagel Activity Center

Minnetonka, the top team in Class 2A, will host Blake, one of the top teams in Class A. The Skippers are 15-0 this season and will use this game as a tune-up for their Classic Lake Conference opener against Hopkins on Thursday, Jan. 21. The Bears are 11-4 this season and looking for a big win to add to their résumé.

Minnetonka vs. Edina, Saturday, Jan. 23, 7 p.m., Pagel Activity Center

One could argue that the Skippers and Hornets are the two best teams in the state this year. While the two teams did meet in the final of the Schwan's Cup - a 3-2 Minnetonka victory - this will be the first of two games between the two teams that will count toward the Classic Lake Conference standings.

Girls' basketball

Orono vs. Minnetonka, Tuesday, Jan. 19, 7:15 p.m., Minnetonka High School

In a nice non-conference match-up, both the Skippers and the Spartans will be looking to bounce back after losses last week. The Spartans (10-2) are coming off a tough three point loss to Waconia, while the Skippers (11-4) are coming off a ten point loss to Robbinsdale Armstrong.

Minnetonka vs. Edina, Friday, Jan. 22, 7:15 p.m., Edina High School

The Hornets are off to a 14-0 start this season, and after a 70-44 shellacking of Hopkins last week, everyone knows the Hornets are for real. The Skippers have had a nice season as well at 11-4, but they will be the underdogs on the road in this contest.

Boys' basketball

Hopkins vs. Minneapolis Henry, Tuesday, Jan. 19, 7 p.m., Patrick Henry High School

In a rematch of an earlier season game, the Royals will look to notch their 11th victory of the season against just two losses. The Royals won 102-87 when the two teams met at Hopkins on Dec. 4.
