Girls' soccer

Wayzata
is undefeated on the season and the No. 1 seed in the section. The Trojans received a bye in the first round and was scheduled to face No. 5 seed Hopkins in one semifinal on Monday, Oct. 19. The Trojans are 13-0-5 on the season and have defeated the Royals twice during the regular season by scores of 3-0 and 7-1. Hopkins advanced to Monday's semifinal by upsetting No. 4 seed Minneapolis Southwest 2-1 in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The second semifinal in section 6-2A features No. 2 seed Minnetonka and No. 3 seed Armstrong. The Skippers advanced to Monday's semifinal with a 2-0 victory over No. 7 seed Cooper on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Carolyn Draayer and Kendall Eitrem scored the two goals for the Skippers. Minnetonka split its two matches with Armstrong during the regular season. The Skippers won 2-1 on Sept. 16 and the Falcons won 3-1 on Oct. 6.

The Orono Spartans moved into the quarterfinals of section 6A with a 10-0 victory over International/Eagle Ridge in a first round match on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Seventh grader Sophie Babo added to her team high total in goals of 19 with two goals in the match. Juniors Ellie Anderson and Blythe Whealy each added two goals of their own in the victory. The Spartans are the No. 2 seed in the section and will now face No. 7 seed Providence Academy in a quarterfinal match on Monday, Oct. 19. Providence Academy advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 5-0 victory over No. 10 seed Mound Westonka on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The No. 1 seed in the section is Benilde-St. Margaret's who Orono lost to 3-2 earlier in the season.

The Blake Bears were scheduled to begin play in section 3A on Monday, Oct. 19 with a quarterfinal match against the Trinity School. The Bears are 12-3-1 on the season and the No. 2 seed in the section.

Boys' soccer

The Skippers were upset in the quarterfinals of section 2-2A by the Prior Lake Lakers, 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 13. The Skippers came into the game as the No. 4 seed in the section, while the Lakers were No. 5. Lakers' sophomore Zach Fennessy scored the game's only goal three minutes into overtime. The Skippers' season comes to close with a record of 8-6-5.

The Spartans were scheduled to begin play in section 6A on Monday, Oct. 19. The Spartans are the No. 2 seed in the section and they received a bye into the quarterfinals. The Spartans were scheduled to face the No. 7 seed Mound Westonka.

Mound Westonka earned the right to play Orono in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Delano in first round action on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The White Hawks have been red hot down the stretch of the season. They are 6-0-1 in their last seven games including a 1-1 tie against Orono on Oct. 8.

The Providence Academy Lions were eliminated from section 6A with a 3-1 loss to Holy Family Catholic in first round action. The Lions finish their season with a record of 8-8-1.

The Blake Bears remained undefeated on the season with a dominating 8-0 victory over Minneapolis North in the first round of the section 3A tournament. The No. 2 seeded Bears are now 12-0-2 on the season. The Bears were schedule to face No. 7 seed Holy Angels in a quarterfinal match on Monday, Oct. 19. Simley is seeded No. 1 in the section.

Football

The Orono Spartans improved to 6-1 on the season with a 20-14 come-from-behind victory over Annandale on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The Spartans trailed 14-6 in the second half but rallied for 14 unanswered points for the victory. Senior running back Chase Gottschalk scored on a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cut the lead to 14-13. Junior quarterback Erik Peterson threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior Andrew Miller for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Junior Reese Van Dyck scored the Spartans other touchdown in the first half on a 25-yard interception return. The Spartans face a tough Wright County Conference match-up this week when they travel to 5-2 Delano on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The Blake Bears improved to 2-5 on the season with a 48-41 victory over St. Paul Academy/Mounds Park Academy on Oct. 14. The Bears exploded for seven touchdowns and 680 yards of offense in the victory. Junior running back Joel Pinedo, who came into the game with 99 yards rushing for the season, ran 19 times for 175 yards in the game. James Carpenter also had season highs in carries and yards with 12 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Tyler Storlie went 16-of-24 for 271 yards and five touchdowns. The Bears will wrap up their regular season schedule this week when they host Concordia Academy at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks dropped to 1-6 on the season with a 28-0 loss to Waconia on Oct. 14, but the big news for the White Hawks is that they were able to snap their 33-game losing streak the week before with a 20-15 victory over Watertown-Mayer. The White Hawks received major contributions from their special teams in that victory with a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown by senior Nick Nobbe and a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by senior Andy Lundgren. The White Hawks will close out their regular season on Oct. 20 when they travel to Zimmerman.

For the first time this season the Wayzata Trojans found themselves behind in a football game. The Trojans trailed Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., 14-13 at halftime in their Oct. 15 game. The Trojans were able to rally, however, with three second half touchdowns to improve to 7-0 on the season with a 34-21 victory. The Trojans will close out the regular season on Oct. 21 when they host Minnetonka.

The Minnetonka Skippers won their fourth straight game and recorded their second shutout of the season with a 10-0 victory over Stevens Point Area High School. The Panthers came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 2 among large schools in Wisconsin. Senior Tom Ahrens made his first start of the season at quarterback for the Skippers and he responded by completing 8-of-13 passes for 133 yards and the game's only touchdown. The Skippers will close out the regular season at Wayzata on Oct. 21.

The Providence Academy Lions improved to 7-0 on the season with a 42-3 victory over Lester Prairie on Oct. 14. The Lions will finish out their regular season on Thursday, Oct. 22 when they host 5-2 Mankato Loyola.
