Seventeen varsity boys' teams and 16 varsity girls' teams - including several teams ranked in the top 10 of their respective polls - participated in Rovn/Bauman Invitational at Gale Woods Farm on Sept. 11-12.
The invite was hosted by Hopkins and named for the longtime Hopkins coaches Jim Rovn and Ed Bauman.
The Wayzata boys' team, which is ranked first in Class 2A, finished in second place behind No. 2 ranked Eden Prairie.
The Eagles had four runners place in the top seven and five in the top 11 for a total team score of 29.
Wayzata had three runners place in the top 10 and five runners place in the top 13 for a total team score of 47.
Trojans sophomore Josh Thorson finished third individually with a time of 16:03 in the 5K race.
Thorson's time was approximately 13 seconds slower than the one turned in by Eden Prairie's Aaron Bartnik, who won the race with a time of 15:50.
Wayzata seniors Landon Lozano and John Subialka finished a second apart from one another in ninth and 10th place. Lozano clipped the finish line in 16:43 while Subialka crossed the line at 16:44.
Wayzata juniors Karl Kabarowski and Mark Harries finished in 12th and 13th places respectively to round out the top five for the Trojans. Kabarowski turned in a time of 16:47 and Harries finished the race in 16:50.
The Hopkins boys' team placed a respectable fifth in the team standings with a total score of 193.
Royals' senior Besu Shannon-Tamrat finished second individually, less than a second behind Bartnik.
Senior Mustaf Osman placed 32nd with a time of 17:21. John Klecker finished in 42nd place by crossing the finish line in 17:39 for the Royals.
Both Hopkins and Minnetonka participated in the girls race with the Royals placing fourth and the Skippers placing seventh.
Hopkins senior Hannah Jocelyn was the lone runner from either team to place in the top 10, as she placed ninth in the 4K race with a time of 15:38. Elk River senior Emma Bates won the race by clipping the finish line in a time of 14:49.
Hopkins junior Selmawit Shannon-Tamrat finished in 22nd place with a time of 16:03.
Freshman Sarah Klecker placed 23rd with a time of 16:04. Junior Kayla Goeman placed 28th in a time of 16:06 and junior Sara Heegaard placed 33rd with a time of 16:13.
Minnetonka was led by senior Collette Celichowski who took 36th place with a time of 16:15. Junior Megan Bailey and freshman Alexandria Forbes placed 41st and 42nd. Eighth grader Margaret Caruth and senior Rachael Hoerauf rounded out the Skippers' top five in 56th and 58th places respectively.
The Wayzata and Minnetonka cross country teams will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 17 at a meet in Lakeville. The Hopkins cross country teams will also be in action on Sept. 17 at a meet in Little Falls.
