PHOTO: email@example.com By Matt Thomas Sports Editor The Minnesota Class A Amateur Baseball State Tournament is down to four teams, including the Minnetonka Millers. The Millers are looking for their 11th state championship and third since 2009.
The Millers are now in a double elimination tournament that will resume on Friday, Aug. 17 at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington. The Millers will play the 2011 state champions, Stockmen's Irish, at 6 p.m. that evening while the Minneapolis Angels and St. Paul Capitals will play in the second semifinal game at 8:30 p.m. Millers' pitcher Nate Melek was the story on Sunday, Aug. 12, as the right hander tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 seven-inning victory over the St. Paul Capitals in the team's opening round game. While Melek was dominating on the mound, Minnetonka batters pounded out 16 hits in the victory. The Millers broke a scoreless tie in their half of the third inning when they put five runs on the board to take a commanding lead. They added single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and then put the game away with three more in the sixth. Shortstop Joe Shallenberger homered in the victory, while Joe Abellera and Zack Trygstad each recorded three hits. Win or lose against Stockmen's Irish on Aug. 17, the Millers are scheduled to play again on Saturday, Aug. 18. The championship game is scheduled for noon on Sunday, Aug. 19, with an "if necessary" second game scheduled for 3 p.m. that afternoon.
