Football season begins
Hundreds of teams and thousands of players will take the gridiron this week as high school football begins another season in the state of Minnesota.

Several teams in the Lakeshore Weekly News coverage area have high aspirations this fall.

Trojans start season 2-0
To nobody's surprise the Trojans are expected to be very good again this season. So good in fact, that the Trojans received the No. 1 spot in the coaches association preseason rankings.

The Trojans have been to the state tournament 17 times in the past 20 years under head coach Tony Peszneker and are coming off their fifth state championship season last year.

Plymouth/New Hope Little Leaguers go 0-2 at LLWS
Quest for title ends for boys

Despite two close games, the all-star team from Plymouth/New Hope Little League went 0-2 and was eliminated from the Little League World Series last week in Williamsport, Pa.

Millers repeat as Class A champions
Two victories gave the team its tenth title

For the second time in as many years and for the tenth time since 1997, the Minnetonka Millers are the Class A amateur baseball state champions.

The Millers, who posted a 46-8 record this summer, defeated the St. Paul Shamrocks two times in three days to win their record tenth title.

Plymouth/New Hope advances to World Series
With an 8-3 victory over the team from Rapid City, S.D. on Saturday, Aug. 14, the team from Plymouth/New Hope Little League won the Midwest Regional Tournament in Indianapolis to advance to this week's Little League World Series.

With the win, Plymouth/New Hope becomes the sixth team from the state of Minnesota to advance to the Little League World Series and the first since a team from Coon Rapids did so in 2007.

The Minnetonka Millers Class A baseball team improved to 44-8 and is now one of six teams still battling for the state title after picking up a pair of opening round victories last weekend at Veterans Field.

Wayzata places second in 2009-10 Challenge Cup
f you were wondering which high schools in the state of Minnesota had the most successful seasons in athletics and fine arts in 2009-10, the verdict is in. Eden Prairie narrowly beat out Wayzata to win the Class 2A 2009-10 Challenge Cup, which is the Minnesota State High School League competition that awards points to high schools throughout the year based on their results in the section and state tournaments.

Excelsior takes third at Legion state tournament
With an overall record of 30-15-1 and the No. 5 ranking in the latest statewide poll, the Excelsior American Legion baseball team was considered one of the favorites in last weekend's state tournament, which was played in Hibbing.

Excelsior earns trip to state Legion tournament
The Excelsior American Legion baseball team went 4-1 in the District 10 Tournament last weekend and earned a trip to the state tournament after a wild come-from-behind 12-11 victory over Fridley in 11 innings.
