By David Schueller
After more than a year of battling lung cancer, Sue Bangert - a Wayzata City Council member for seven years - died on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Her death undoubtedly brings sadness to a community that only a week earlier had rallied around her and family members for a walk to benefit a cancer organization.
Bangert, who was 66 when she died, was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2008.
She was named Wayzata's Citizen of the Year by the City Council, and a reception that had been planned to honor her has been canceled.
Instead, the community is invited to a tribute to Bangert on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the start of the City Council meeting at 7 p.m.
Mayor Ken Willcox, in a statement, invited anyone wishing to share their sentiments about Bangert to speak. Following the tribute, the Citizen of the Year award will be presented to family members.
