9/14/2009 3:06:00 PM Election '09: School board races draw a crowd
By Brett Stursa
All of the school boards around the Lake Minnetonka area have contested races, after filings closed last week.
Candidates had until Sept. 8 to file for the Nov. 3 election.
The Wayzata School Board race drew the most candidates, as a total of eight candidates are running for four seats.
Six candidates filed for three seats that have four-year terms on the Wayzata School Board, and two candidates filed for one seat that has a two-year term.
Incumbents John Moroz and Susan Hayes Droegemueller will face challenges from Erik Brown, Susan Gaither, Nolan Fredrickson and Marvin Hannon.
Incumbent Carter Peterson filed for the two-year term, as did Mark Ness.
The two-year term seat is currently held by Greg Rye, who was appointed by the board after Gary Landis resigned.
Hopkins School Board
Five candidates will vie for three seats on the Hopkins School Board.
Stan Berris and Sandy Forster did not file for reelection, so Betsy Scheurer will be the only incumbent running.
Israel Alguindique, Warren Goodroad, Paul Scofield and Susan Wootten also filed in the race. Each seat carries a four-year term.
Minnetonka School Board
In Minnetonka, incumbents Erin Adams and Pam Langseth filed for reelection. They will face challenges from Peg Keenan and Jim Patterson. The four candidates will be vying for three seats, which carry four-year terms.
Cathy Maes did not file for reelection.
Orono School Board
In Orono, four candidates will vie for three seats. The seats carry four-year terms.
Incumbent Martha Van de Ven was the only board member to file for reelection, as Jack Veach and Michele Kunz did not file.
In addition to Van de Ven, Lyle Brandt, Bob Tunheim and Mike Johnson filed.
Hopkins City Council
In Hopkins, mayor Eugene Maxwell will likely serve another two-year term as he was the only one to file for the seat.
There will be two council seats on the ballot, with each seat carrying a four-year term. Both Kristi Halverson and Cheryl Youakim filed for reelection.
Their challengers will be Jim Beauchene, Jason Gadd, Destiny Rose Holiday and Jeffrey Tarman.
Minnetonka City Council
Filings closed in July for the Minnetonka City Council and Westonka School Board races.
In Minnetonka, incumbent Dick Allendorf will face opposition from Bonnie Bina for an At Large seat.
Incumbent Amber Greves, who was appointed to an At Large seat earlier this year, will run against David Asp, who had applied to be appointed.
Mayor Terry Schneider, who also was appointed to the seat earlier this year, was the only one to file for mayor, which means he's likely to serve another two years.
Westonka School Board
In the Westonka School Board race, six people will be vying for three seats.
The three incumbents - Ron Faust, Keith Forester and Martine Hewitt - all are running for reelection.
Their challengers are Robert Hutchins, Margie Saatzer and Gary Wollner.
