Local agencies amp up fight against AIS

As the boats head back to the water, so does the hunt for aquatic invasive species. Agencies and lakeshore owners are rolling out new methods to find and battle AIS this season. The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is emphasizing early detection this summer. The district will expand its monitoring program of lakes that are not yet infested with zebra mussels. "Our main focus will be on zebra mussels, because they're definitely the most immediate threat.

Minnetonka predicts imminent arrival of ash borer

EAB is not an acronym for a small oil-rich kingdom in the Persian Gulf, or for a European banking conglomerate. It stands for the Emerald Ash Borer that, like the fictitious petroleum giant or the financial institution, is foreign in its origin. This EAB is a green, narrow insect not quite a half-inch in length and its presence in the U.S. has been posing major survival issues for millions of ash trees, especially in the Midwest, according to forestry studies. Right now, it has been found in 14 states, including Minnesota, and parts of Canada.

Stolz: Stepping out of the spotlight

The closing of "Mahalia" at the end of April wasn't just the end of a run of a play at the Old Log Theater. It marked the end of a remarkable era in American theater. The show will be the final one presented at the venerable theater by its long-time owner and producer, Don Stolz. The Stolz family has agreed to sell the business to Greg and Marissa Frankenfield. "It's sad of course," Stolz said. "It's a sad time for me and the boys, but it is also a happy time because it is going to go on and continue." It marks the end of a remarkable venture between Stolz and the Old Log. His first association with the theater came in 1941, when a college instructor asked if he could fill in as director on Sidney Howard's "Ned McCobb's Daughter." That show led to another, and another.
